My rating: 5 of 5 stars
First, let me mention the author's skill in showing an amazingly frank approach from the main character in this novel. The writing style is quite unique. Because of this, I became involved with Alex and wanted to know what the teenager would do after leaving prison. When his uncaring and rich brother picks him up outside the gates, this totally unexpected luck is hard to grasp, especially when he's taken in by his estranged family. His sister-in-law, Jen, and her daughter, endeared themselves to him, and to me.
The teen's recollections are typed in diary form after each event as though speaking straight to his best friend in a letter. Every thought and feeling is explained and woven into the background of his surroundings as he learns how to behave and then breaks the rules again and again. But this is Alex's learning journey.
The story shows unconditional love that inspires me to follow an ideal set of values to an incredibly powerful ending that had happy tears running down my cheeks long before the final words.
